Healthy cooking doesn’t have to be expensive: The best tips
Healthy food is expensive? This is a widespread myth that urgently needs to be refuted! We’ll tell you how you can eat sensibly even on a low budget and do something good for your body and your account.
Reach for the cooking spoon yourself
Admittedly, ready meals or fast food save time – but money by no means! On the one hand, ready meals in the supermarket or visits to the burger restaurant have their price, on the other hand they saturate less – not to mention the nutrient density. As a result, they eat more often to be really full and spend more on it. Most ready meals also contain too much sugar, fat and salt. So cooking fresh is always worth it, despite the extra effort.
Prepare larger quantities
It is advisable to prepare larger quantities at the same time. So you can enjoy the remains of your dinner the next day in the lunch break and are not dependent on expensive restaurant visits or the overpriced bread roll with the baker. What’s left can also be frozen in plastic cans – so you have a healthy meal ready when time is short again. The healthiest detox drink costs you only 50 cents and a few seconds of your time – have a look.
Plan your purchases
You want to eat healthy and save money? Then it is advisable to plan your shopping and meals. Study the offers of your local supermarkets and buy a supply of the cheap food right away. If you pick out your recipes and ingredients in advance, you will know exactly what you want to buy and cook in the evening and will not run the risk of falling back on fast food. Writing a shopping list and adhering to it is as banal as it is important: expensive pleasure purchases don’t stand a chance. You don’t like paper money? With the free App Bring! you can digitally record all your shopping lists and even share them with your family.
Bet on season!
You should also rely on seasonal products: In summer, for example, tomatoes are cheaper because they have to be imported in winter. Even taking a deep-freeze is not wrong per se: many types of vegetables are frozen at their optimum ripeness without additives. The vitamins and nutrients are thus preserved and you save unnecessary food waste, as you can conveniently take the required amount and the rest remains fresh. A visit to the weekly market or farm can also pay off: Special promotional offers are often tempting there and the goods are particularly fresh and of high quality. For example, you can conjure up great recipes with a single cucumber.
Healthy yet affordable – this is how it works
In order to buy nutritious food, it does not always have to be the organic market. Many discounters now also sell fruit, vegetables, wholemeal noodles or meat in organic quality – and for little money! Do you need a healthy and inexpensive breakfast? Oat flakes provide complex carbohydrates, proteins, ballast and minerals, keep you full of milk and fruit for a long time and the price of around 40 cents for 500 grams is almost unbeatable. You can easily mix delicious fruit yoghurt yourself from natural yoghurt and frozen berries: Finished yoghurts usually contain a lot of sugar and few natural ingredients, and if you have any frozen fruit left over: Process the rest into a raspberry yoghurt ice-cream.
- finely puree frozen raspberries, cream and yoghurt in an electric chopper.
- season with sugar, vanilla pulp and grated orange peel and serve immediately.
Small tip at the end
You should definitely avoid going hungry shopping. So too many goods end up in your basket – and it’s also one of the worst diet traps.
Aronia – The apple berry
The Aronia melanocurpa is little known in this country. Perhaps it is familiar to a few people under the name apple berry (or bald apple berry). In Eastern Europe it has been appreciated as an effective medicinal plant for several decades. Optically rather inconspicuous, one could almost confuse the aronia berry with the blueberry – the berries of the aronia plant have a healthier effect.
Aronia: effect and origin
Originally originating from eastern North America, the aronia plant came to Russia in the 19th century. Since the middle of the 20th century it has also been used for medicinal purposes in the former Soviet Union. Apple berries are not only particularly suitable for treating high blood pressure, they are also used to treat capillary toxicoses, certain forms of gastritis and bleeding.
Furthermore, the Aronia plant is used as a remedy for allergies, stomach complaints, liver and gall diseases and childhood diseases, and has a positive effect on the immune system, blood formation and the regeneration of bone and muscle tissue.
Apple berry protects against free radicals
The Aronia plant is a versatile remedy because it is a donor of folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin K and flavonoid. Many diseases of our modern society are caused by unstable oxygen molecules, which we call free radicals. They influence cell metabolism and cause oxidative stress, which can lead to serious secondary diseases. It also accelerates the aging process.
Aronia is rich in secondary plant substances that counteract all this. Free radicals are bound by a high proportion of antioxidants. Since free radicals can also influence the development of cancer, regular consumption of apple berries can have a cancer-preventing effect. The Aroniabeere is also a means against damages by sun radiation and with skin diseases – even with the radiation disease the apple berry is used. Aronia thus has the potential to become the new anti-aging elixir of tomorrow.
Environmentally conscious humans can prevent also Arterienverkalkung and nerve damage with the benefit of Aronia. Sometimes the apple berry is also said to have a positive influence on mental illnesses.
Aronia juice or aronia jam?
The Aronia has however a small deficiency: Apple berries have a harsh taste despite their relatively high sugar content, so that many humans prefer Aroniasaft drink or Aronia jam on the bread spread. But one should not exaggerate it. A glass of aronia juice diluted with water (pure aronia juice still has a relatively bitter taste) daily is sufficient. Because with increased consumption also stomach problems can occur.
Instead of water, the Aronia juice can also be mixed with other fruit juices or enjoyed as lemonade by further processing. In the Soviet Union, the aronia berry was also used for the processing of sweets. Since finished apple berry products are rarely available in Germany, you can also try out some Aronia recipes yourself.
